5 Ways to Keep Your Home Safe and Warm This Winter
With winter knocking at our doors it is time to button up our homes and keep them dry, safe and cozy as we enter the cold and wet season here in the PNW. Here I will outline my top 5 tips on keeping your home in it's best shape until warmer and drier temperatures return.
1. Change Furnace Filters
Easily overlooked, replacing furnace filters or cleaning the existing filter, is a great way to increase airflow and reduce energy consumption. Keeping the furnace in proper working order will ensure your home stays warm all winter long.
2. Clear Gutters and Roof of Debris
Fall tends to leave it's mark around the PNW. It's a good idea to clear the debris from the roof and gutters to ensure water can properly flow off of the roof and away from the home. Water that finds itself against the foundation runs the risk of pooling and expanding and contracting as it freezes and melts which can eventually cause cracks in the homes foundation.
3. Insulate pipes and Hose Spigots
Heating water is energy intensive. Locating and insulating pipes in your home that carry hot water is a great way to cut down on heating costs. It also ensures that no pipes burst over winter as a result of freezing.
4. Beat the Draft
An amazing amount of energy can be lost by heat escaping around doors and windows. Caulking and weatherstripping can be used to fill the gaps and create a barrier to keep the heat from getting out.
5. Seal Your Ducts
Experts say between 20-30% of heated air is lost through faulty ducts. Properly sealing your ducts ensures heated air arrives where it is intended. HVAC companies can test your ducts and determine if there is a leak along the way. This can translate to reduced energy use and increased savings.
Surely there are other ways to prepare your home for the season such as stringing up the holiday lights, bringing a tree inside, etc. These are just 5 ways to ensure your home is working efficiently and keeping you and your family warm and dry this winter.
